The first 3D mario game to be based off of the linear 2D mario games, it's Super Mario 3D Land!
In the fall of November 13 2011, this game completely changed how 3D Mario played. Instead of open-world exploration like the other games, it was instead focused on linear platforming through what were essentially 3D renditions of 2D levels. This was, and still remains, a controversial style of gameplay. Many say this was a welcome change, while others say it was a step-down from the previous games. Nonetheless, it is still a title worthy of playing, especially taking into account it's portability factor.
